Hi There!

Myself Mohit Mahajan and I am MEP Engineer by Profession.

MEP stands for Mechanical , Electrical and Plumbing.

Today i am going to share one of the major vertical of AEC (Architectural, Engineering, Construction) Industry.

So Let’s Get Started.

Basically ,In simple words Corridor is a common passage or circulation Space within habitable areas like residential, commercial, hospital, hotels & schools.

Also,

Its a common path for service from source to load center.

Here we will take example of residential building having height more that 30 meter.

Fig (i)

While designing lobby associated services, we need to keep following main aspects in mind:

A) Services required in normal mode operation.

B) Services required in Fire mode operation.

Let’s see in detail:

A) Services required in normal mode operation:

In order to complete each tenant requirement in residential segment need planning of services which required us in day to day life.

i) Electrical

Typical lobby should consist of space provision of electrical shaft which is sufficient enough to lay conduit /rising main for each tenant for entire wing/apartment.

ii) Low voltage (Data, Telephone,CCTV)

Space provision of LV shaft which is sufficient enough to lay data/ telephone requirement for each tenant for entire wing/apartment.

iii) Vertical Transportation (Elevator)

Space provision of Elevator shaft which is sufficient enough to handle maximum pax with less waiting interval & high speed as per building height.

iv) Plumbing (not part of lobby)

Though it is not part of lobby as a designer we need to plan sufficient shaft provision for water supply, drainage requirement.

v) HVAC

Central air conditioning or dedicated system in both cases to provide comfort in lift lobby if lobby provided with air conditioning system then space provision of HVAC shaft required to lay refrigerant/chilled water pipe to serve that system.

Most of the cases residential building not having such provision but in case of clubhouse and dedicated area with air-conditioning provision provided by client in that case shaft provision required for further periodic maintenance also.

B) Services required in Fire mode operation:

In case of fire mode to rescue each tenant in premises along with fire fighters some active & passive components involved. Some of the passive components we can take into account while designing itself like

For planning we refer NBC 2016 Vol 1 part 4 table 6

I) Staircase Pressurization

As per our case study building height more than 30 m

a) Internal staircase not with external wall - Pressurized

b) Internal staircase with external wall –Cross ventilated or press.

You can see in attached figure staircase are cross ventilated so pressurization not required. If it is case of I b) we need to plan pressurization shaft for staircase also.

II) Lift lobby:

Lift Lobby – Cross ventilated or pressurized.

In above fig. we can see lift lobby also planned cross ventilated so lift lobby pressurization not required near passenger elevator.

Whereas fire check lobby is not cross ventilated so in that case we provided pressurization shaft.

III) Lift well Pressurization:

If lift lobby can not be provided at any of the level in internal space where funnel / flue effect may created then only lift hoist way shall be pressurized. For building greater than 30 m in height multiple point injection air inlet to maintain desired pressurization level shall be provided.

IV) Fire Fighting:

As a designer we should provide space for fire fighting shaft in which active system like sprinkler riser, drain line, wet riser along with fire hose reel & single headed hydrant valve.

V) Fire Alarm & public addressable system:

As fire alarm & public addressable system is part of LV shaft itself.

Additional space required at respective level for their peripherals only.

However as case study we consider residential part but in same manner different segment also above services space planning is required ,which we need to ensure as per NBC 2016 which is guideline for us. Any case local guideline suppressed over NBC 2016 .
