I am sure by now most of the industry professionals have heard about the term PMP or read about people boasting about it on their LinkedIn Profiles and wondered what is this PMP. My introduction with PMP happened in 2013 when I was at my job as Project Manager at Gallo Construction in Albany, NY. I was in my 4th year of the Student Visa (widely known as OPT) and wanted to upgrade my project management skills and that is when I found my way to PMP . I took the 35 hrs project management education which was a prerequisite for the course from an educational service provider. Qualified for the PMP exam and after rigorous studying over a period of two months while working full time I was able to crack the PMP exam. The course work that includes the training and the exam prep is exhilarating and very informative.
PMP as a professional in the construction industry
One needs to understand that PMI is a world renowned body which has spent years in studying and implementing the best practices in project management . They have carefully curated these programs to cover various industry project managers. The Project Management Professional (PMP) certification tells employers, peers and the world know what you are doing in project management.Certified PMPs report earning up to 25% more than non-certified project management professionals.
As you must have figured that the construction industry is so haphazard in its working style . No two projects are the same and processes need to be made for each new project. A project manager is the captain of the ship in this scenario. Over the years the industry has kept the experience atop of leadership but with technology and various systems coming into place we need our next generation to understand these functions faster. I would recommend every construction manager to take up these certification courses as they would just help them to understand the processes and grow ahead of real time experiences.
